Experiment 3

Mash up

Architecture can be seen as a composition of many single elements. Optimization of single elements should be prioritised over looking at the complete structure. A structure of interest should be targeted to optimize its function, whether it is to improve efficiency, or improve the general impression of the structure. A group of optimized structures allows for more possibilities in comparison to seeing the structure as a whole.

Entrance - The aesthetics found from the building can be seen through the minimalistic theme which runs through the building which focusing on optimising the individual elements of the building.

Aerial View - The size of the lecture room highlights its significance over the other smaller rooms.

Gallery - The large open spaces of the gallery is optimised to encourage social activity from students.

View from ANZAC Parade - Onlookers from ANZAC Parade can see the various classrooms and individual components which make up the building without having to enter the building.

Classrooms - The classrooms can be see individual from the rest of the building, separate yet a core aspect of the building.

School of Civil Engineering

The rooms of the building can be seen as individual elements serving as the building's facade. Every room appears to be attached to the main building and sized as though separate from the rest of the building. However when within the building, each room plays the role in which they are required and at the same time each room is able to integrate to the rest of the building. The building bridges to the Tyree building which specialises in one of the many branches of engineering, namely energy. Energy consumption is an important factor for civil engineers when considering a building.

Concepts

Carlo Scarpa
1. Light as a tool for navigation - articulating the path
2. Parts and whole - the idea of a 'whole' composed of a number of geometries
3. Interlocking as a means of joining
4. Celebration of the corner
5. Enhancing materiality through contrast

Alvaro Siza
1. Seamlessness
2. Articulating the gesture of circulation, continuous movement.
3. Shadow as material/ornament.
4. Volume of homogeneous materials carved out to create spaces
5. Clear delineation between inside and outside.
6. Monolithic scale vs human scale.
7. Form follows function.

Interlocking as a Means of Joining

When observing the joints of a structure, a strong interlocking joints give the overall structure a strong unified appearance causing a person within the structure to feel as though they themselves are intertwined with the structure.

Monolithic Scale Versus Human Scale

A structure's scale in relation to the viewer's scale will cause the structure to have a certain atmosphere surrounding it. A monolithic structure will tower over a person which will give the viewer a daunting experience whereas a smaller structure is more approachable.

Electroliquid Aggregation of Concepts

The Marker’s structural form is created from the combination and contrast between the monolithic and the human scale.  Through this juxtaposition it is reflective of how the community of Blacktown is created by the many different citizens of the region. The Combination and interlocking of the monolithic and the personal level also reflect the strength of the bond between community and citizen.
The size of magnificent size of the exterior can also be contrasted against the smaller interior which is at a scale more relative to a person. This suggest the notion of reflecting up ones own cultural values compared with evaluating values of others within a community. The interior is an exhibition space housing items and information, educating residents of Blacktown and visitors of the cultural diversity amongst the community.
